Interstate Telehealth Compact Adds Pennsylvania, Takes Effect in 2017

Pennsylvania has joined the group of states supporting the telehealth-friendly Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, which goes into effect in just over two months. Governor Tom Wolf’s signature last week on legislation unanimously approved by both the state House and Senate makes Pennsylvania the 18th state to sign onto the compact, which establishes a streamlined application process for physicians looking to practice in more than one state. Launched in 2013 by the Federation of State Medical Boards, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit comprised of some 70 state medical boards and regulatory agencies, and going into effect on January 1, 2017, the compact is seen by many as a boost to telehealth practice across state lines. Telehealth Changes Way Schools Check for Athletic Concussions

Telehealth tools, ranging from apps to headgear and the occasional robot, are changing the way schools and youth sports leagues check for concussions in their athletes. It’s not uncommon these days for a high school or college physical trainer to have a tablet stowed alongside the bandages, water bottles and aspirin. When an athlete suffers a hard hit to the head, the trainer can call up an app that helps measure visual processing, cognitive perception, coordination and memory. Read more

Moms

Mothers Want 24-Hour Access to Doctors, Supportive of Telehealth  

A survey of more than 500 mothers by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia and telehealth provider LiveHealth Online finds that 100 percent wants round-the-clock access to doctors and other healthcare offerings. Almost 80 percent say they want to learn more about telemedicine to help deal with a non-emergency medical issue. Mothers see telehealth as a more convenient alternative to the doctor’s office. Almost 65 percent said it’s a challenge to take a sick child to the doctor’s office during the school year, with seven out every ten mothers spending more than two hours out of a busy day on such a visit. Medicare Finalizes 2017 Fee Schedule, Includes Telehealth Implications

Last week, The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released its final Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) for CY 2017. The rule finalized the addition of several codes for telehealth reimbursement including end-stage renal disease (ESRD) related services for dialysis and advance care planning codes. CMS also finalized new codes for telehealth consultations for patients requiring critical care services. Read more
