Increase in Cyber Security Breaches

Health Cybersecurity Breaches Up, Mitigating Resources Down, Healthcare Society Reports

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s (HIMSS) latest cybersecurity report confirms trends most in the healthcare industry have indicated: breaches are up, prioritizing cybersecurity is up, and lack of resources continues to be a top barrier in mitigating cybersecurity risks.  The 2016 HIMSS Cybersecurity Survey gathered responses from 150 U.S.-based provider organizations regarding their experiences dealing with cybersecurity. HIMSS outlined seven key findings in their report, which can be found in the following Becker’s Hospital Review. Read more

HHS Reports Benefits, Difficulties in its Expanding Rural Telehealth Services

In response to a request from Congress, the US Department of Health and Human Services released its report on the agency’s current telehealth efforts. The report was comprehensive in its scope of the potential promise of telemedicine, especially given the ever-expanding availability of services, as well as the myriad difficulties in implementation due to inconsistent policies, costs and licensing agreements. The report focuses on the promise of telehealth to reach those in rural or underserved populations (including many veterans), to manage chronic diseases, deliver mental health or specialist services, and to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations. It also outlined the challenges of reimbursement, licensure, credentialing and privileging, and broadband connectivity. Read more

Proactive Telehealth's Early Detection of Chronic Diseases Improves Outcomes

Until recently home telehealth, remote patient monitoring programs and mobile apps were managed as separate programs at the US Department of Veteran’s Affairs. Now, they're all organized under the Office of Connected Care. This effort is working towards using mobile technology to connect veterans to friends and family for social weight loss or nutrition interventions, or even to do group therapy for PTSD with members of the same unit, who could work through shared experiences together.  Read more

Texas Business Big on Telehealth

The Texas Association of Business, an employers’ lobbying group, is joining the pro-telemedicine camp.  The group just released results of two surveys (750 members, and 600 registered voters) that support legislation to allow telemedicine to operate more freely in the state.   Based on age, political affiliation, income and family size, questions included whether they would like telemedicine as part of their health benefits, how often they used their healthcare services, and how much time and money they used on healthcare. Read more

"Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton posted Aug. 29th her plans for mental health care on that focus on harnessing information technologies to bolster health care coordination. Clinton said she would adjust payment systems in Medicare, Medicaid, and under the Public Health Service Act to allow for reimbursement of telepsychiatry and other telehealth services delivered through primary care and hospital settings. (Donald Trump has made no reference to telehealth or telemedicine in his online position paper on Health Care Reform.)" Read more
