This Month on the Blog: Cyber Security in Healthcare

Cyber. Security.

While separately, these two words may pose no anxiety to the average person, when placed together they can be a daunting and overwhelming task to tackle for information technology (IT) departments across the country. In a world where the Internet of Things (IoT) has virtually every sector and industry connected via the Internet, the importance and criticalness of cyber security means more today than it ever has before. Read more

Innovation within Hospitals Being Spurred by Telehealth's Growth

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services now covers 40 telehealth services, and the 21st Century Cures Act that Congress passed in December 2016 directs the agency to find more. Some hospitals and health systems are already ahead of the curve. Here are some interesting and effective ways telehealth is being used today that other hospitals could emulate. Medical Coding Change

2017 Code Manual Increases Eligibility

After a long period of what seemed to be little headway in the ability to use Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes to bill for telemedicine services, progress has been made. The 2017 CPT manual has a new Appendix P that lists 79 standard CPT codes for which a “95” modifier can be used to indicate that the service was provided via a real-time, interactive audio and video telecommunications system. A new place of service (POS) code, 02, has been created for telemedicine services. The code took effect on Jan. 1 and is required for clinicians reporting telemedicine services. Medicare will continue to expand the telemedicine services eligible for payment in 2017. Read more

New FCC Chairman Taps Cleveland Clinic on Telehealth, Mobile Apps

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai visited the Cleveland Clinic Thursday to learn more about distance health and telemedicine, such as using a mobile app for a remote doctor's visit. He said the clinic is "on the cutting edge" of using this technology" that is only possible with broadband internet access, which is regulated by the FCC.  At the clinic, Pai visited the mobile stroke unit, equipped to quickly send images to a doctor who can determine if a patient is having a stroke. This saves vital time in diagnosing a patient, which leads to more rapid treatment. Read more
