Justice Department Says Telehealth Could Enhance Competition

The Department of Justice's Antitrust Division submitted a statement describing how Michigan Senate Bill 753 (H-1) has the potential to enhance competition and promote greater use of telehealth services for the benefit of patients and consumers. “Consumers benefit when innovative technologies further competition to deliver convenient and affordable quality health care,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Renata Hesse of the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division. “Telehealth, when used consistent with patient health and safety, has the potential to improve not just access to certain types of health care, but also the cost of that care." Read more



Data Breaches Face Healthcare Industry in 2017, Experian Report Predicts

Experian's Data Breach Industry Forecast report outlines the top five data breach trends predicted for 2017. Healthcare organizations will be the most targeted sector. Breaches involving Electronic Health Records (EHRs) will continue to grow, according to Experian. In addition, Experian predicts hackers will begin targeting health insurers. Cybercriminals are shifting their focus toward ransomware, which Experian believes will also be a top concern in 2017. Read more

Telehealth Parity Laws

Telehealth Parity Laws Proliferate from Coast to Coast in Many Forms

Telemedicine parity laws require reimbursement for telemedicine services in the same manner and at the same reimbursement amount as for analogous in-person medical treatment. While these laws have spread quickly, there are many important distinctions among them. Some of these distinctions are worth careful consideration. For example, some States have adopted laws or policies that apply only to Medicaid. Other States have passed legislation that binds private payers as well. Read more



Study Finds Veteran Community Benefits from Remote Counseling

Veterans dealing with depression can be treated just as well with telehealth as with in-person care, according to a recent study. Studying more than 200 senior-aged veterans for one year between 2007 and 2011, researchers from the Medical University of South Carolina and other institutions found “little or no meaningful difference” in symptoms or patient satisfaction between care delivered in a clinician’s office and that delivered via video. The one difference lies in convenience, especially for elderly veterans. Read more
