The 115th Congress is gearing up to launch efforts to expand high-speed internet access to an under-served swath of the population, an initiative that could dovetail with President Trump's plan to make broadband a pillar of his larger infrastructure investment plan. But federal lawmakers also could carry on with their efforts independent of Trump's infrastructure ambitions, should those fail to be realized.  Read more

Nebraska Legislature Moves to Address Rural Healthcare Shortages

A lack of health care in rural Nebraska is prompting a new push by lawmakers to expand telehealth services. Two bills introduced last week would encourage more providers to adopt the technology, which allows doctors and patients to connect remotely through the internet or by phone. Both measures are designed to serve smaller communities that have health clinics but few if any full-time doctors, said Sen. Mark Kolterman of Seward, the lead sponsor. The measures would also prompt Nebraska to join the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, an agreement that offers expedited licensing for doctors who want to practice medicine in other member states. Read more


CMS Ruling

CMS Finalizes New Rule with Waivers for Telehealth Services

Last month the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) finalized their rule regarding Episode Payment Models (EPMs) for cardiac and hip fracture care that will incentivize hospitals to provide higher quality care. The new CMS regulation waives several of the requirements in Medicare‚Äôs telehealth policy for these EPMs. First, the rule would waive the Medicare requirement that the originating site be located in a rural health professional shortage area or non-Metropolitan Statistical Area. Second, the patient homes would qualify as an eligible originating site.  Read more

Minnesota Announces Package of Grants for Broadband Infrastructure Projects

Lt. Governor Tina Smith and the Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) today announced grants totaling $34 million for 42 broadband infrastructure projects that will provide 16,627 households, 2,240 businesses, and 71 community institutions across Minnesota access to reliable, affordable high-speed internet. The new state funding will help level the playing field for households and businesses in Greater Minnesota by providing them access the same opportunities available to urban area residents.  Read more and see listing of 42 projects here:
